Faux Films at Kunsthal

Kunsthal Rotterdam — The Netherlands

At Kunsthal Rotterdam we presented our Faux Films series during Friday Night LIVE, an evening programmed by Fashion In Flux around the theme of otherworlding. Otherworlding is a term used in art, science fiction and activism to imagine worlds where other forms of life, relationships and values are possible. It sits close to our own practice, where generative AI becomes a tool to picture movies that do not yet exist.

The evening also included an artist talk with Noëlle hosted by Yophi Ignacia, where she spoke about the series, the role of generative AI in her practice and the kind of worldbuilding that connects Faux Films to the wider theme of the night.

Faux Films is an ongoing AI series that brings non-existent movies to life. Each episode centres on a film that was never made, complete with its own scenes, characters and settings. The works invite viewers into stories that live only in the space of make-believe, somewhere between cinema, memory and speculation. For Friday Night LIVE we showed a selection from the series on an 6 by 3.5 meter screen in the Kunsthal café, the central space of the evening.

Kunsthal is one of the most prominent art institutions in the Netherlands. Located in the heart of Rotterdam, it presents around twenty five exhibitions a year across disciplines, from classical art to contemporary design, fashion and photography. Fashion In Flux is a Rotterdam based platform working towards a new fashion culture that is community driven, inclusive and open. It brings makers from the Netherlands and abroad together, puts urgent themes on the agenda and creates space for new initiatives as an alternative to a traditional system that keeps inequality in place.
