Lowlands is for Lovers

Lowlands Festival — Biddinghuizen, The Netherlands

Lowlands is for Lovers is a video installation we made for Lowlands Festival, the biggest music festival in the Netherlands, where 65,000 visitors stay for the full three day weekend. The work was shown on Cape Lowlands in a six by six by six meter cube, placed between the Armadillow and Bravo stage.

The installation shows a future version of Lowlands. We leave it open whether that future is three years away or thirty. We made 765 videos, over an hour and a half of footage in total, split across a day loop and a night loop that switched when it got dark. Using generative AI we built a world where the festival has grown but still feels like itself.

Across the festival sector costs are rising and ticket prices with them, while the cultural sector is being cut. Lowlands sits in the middle of that conversation. This work steps away from the debate and looks at what stays the same. The love people have for this festival. The music. Each other. The small rituals of the weekend, from the first coffee at the campsite to the last dance of the night.

Noëlle has been going to Lowlands since she was seventeen. This piece is a love letter to the festival and to the people who keep coming back.
